Requirements Specification

What is a requirements specification? Definition and meaning

A requirements specification is also referred to as a requirements catalogue. It is a list of all requirements that a technical product should fulfil. This can be a machine or software, but also vehicles or buildings.

Tasks of a Requirements Specification

In a requirements specification, all requirements that a client demands from a contractor are defined in precise detail. This allows the contractor to develop an appropriate solution.

The counterpart to the requirements specification is the functional specification, which the contractor presents to the client. It is a detailed elaboration of the requirements for deliverables and services defined in the requirements specification.

Quality Management with a Requirements Specification

A requirements specification is a quality management document standardised according to DIN 69901-5.

It should contain the following points:

  • Brief introduction with description of the current state
  • Description of the target state
  • Description of the requirements (functions & interfaces)
  • Acceptance of risks
  • Sketches
  • Scope of delivery
  • Acceptance criteria
