Successor

What is a Successor? Definition and meaning

In project management the tasks of a project are identified and represented using a process plan (e.g. network diagram). This shows the logical relationship of the individual tasks within a project. The successor is accordingly a task that can only start once its predecessors have been completed. This does not refer to the chronological order.

Successor vs business succession: which one is meant

In everyday language a successor is a person who takes over from another, for example in a business succession, in an office or in a position. In project management and in projectfacts, however, a successor means a task that only starts once its predecessors have been completed. It is therefore about the logical dependency of tasks, not about people.

Frequently asked questions

What is a successor in project management?
A successor is a task that can only begin once its predecessors have been completed. It maps the logical relationship of the tasks of a project, not their purely chronological order.
Does a successor refer to the chronological order?
No. The term successor describes the logical dependency between tasks, not their chronological sequence. A task is a successor because it requires the completion of other tasks, regardless of when it is scheduled to take place.
