Gantt Chart

Definition

This bar chart, named after Henry L. Gantt, is an important instrument of project management. It graphically represents the time sequences of various tasks and activities of a project in the form of bars on a timeline.

Tasks of the Gantt Chart

Each bar in the Gantt chart defines the timeframe of an activity in the project. The start and end date as well as the duration are immediately recognizable.

This type of visualization through bars provides a clear and easy-to-read overview of adherence to the project schedule.

In order to show the extent to which activities are linked to one another, one should use network diagram techniques in project management instead of the Gantt chart.
