Network map

The network planning technique is a method that is used particularly frequently in project management for scheduling projects or even sub-projects. It represents the chronological sequence of the individual actions, but also their interdependencies.

By means of network diagrams

  • forecasts for start and end, as well as milestones can be created.
  • Activities are identified that are essential for the completion of the project.
  • bottlenecks are made visible early on using the critical path and thus avoided.
  • time buffers can be actively integrated into the schedule.
  • involved employees get a better overview.

An activity in a network is usually represented as a rectangle. It contains the name of the activity and its activity number, as well as information about the duration, the earliest and latest start and end times and information about possible buffers.

The critical path shows the activities whose buffer times are zero. If a delay occurs there, the whole project is delayed.
