In project management, a task represents a time-defined process with a start and end point. Within a task there are usually several activities that must be processed and completed within this time frame. How long a task takes is determined based on the required effort of those individual activities.

A task can also shift if it is dependent on its predecessor. Using a Gantt chart, the relationships and dependencies of individual tasks can be displayed and monitored.
